Prestigious Awards Program Recognizes Outstanding Educational Technology Products and Companies

SILVER SPRING, Md. (Wednesday, June 24, 2020) – Discovery Education today announced that EdTech Breakthrough – a leading market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies and solutions in the global educational technology market – has selected the Girls Get STEM Initiative from Girl Scouts of the USA and Discovery Education as the winner of the “Best Science Learning Solution” award in the second annual EdTech Breakthrough Awards program.

Girls Get STEM: Unleash Your Inner Scientist offers no-cost, dynamic digital resources for K-5 educators, troop leaders, and parents to spark girls’ interest in STEM. Guided by the power of STEM learning and entrepreneurship, the initiative works to create a more equitable future for young girls to become tomorrow’s leaders.

The initiative includes compelling resources such as the Unleash Your Citizen Scientist Virtual Field Trip (VFT) that aims to inspire students to take positive action through STEM in their classrooms and communities. Accompanied by digital curriculum, including educator and troop leader guides plus classroom activities, the 30-minute VFT transports students to the STEM Center of Excellence in Dallas, Texas where STEM comes to life with women at the helm. Mix and match all the resources, including the dynamic STEM bundles, to further amplify the power of STEM learning.

“We are extremely proud of the momentum and success of the Girls Get STEM initiative, and we see this as an exemplary model for what the future of the STEM workforce can look like as we nurture the interest in STEM that already exists in girls,” said Beth Meyer, Vice President of Partner Success at Discovery Education. “By providing communities with no-cost dynamic digital resources focused on address gender equity in STEM education across the country, we are demonstrating that any student can use the scientific method to build a better world and inspire positive community action. This 2020 EdTech Breakthrough Award is a fantastic validation of the success and potential of an inspiring STEM initiative, and we look forward to growing this initiative to build engagement and confidence around STEM fields with our partner, Girl Scouts of the USA.”

“Girls Get STEM shows the power of women and girls in STEM,” said Suzanne Harper, Sr. Director of National STEM Strategy at GSUSA. “By working with Discovery Education, Girl Scouts has been able to bring our program’s hands-on experience into classrooms, addressing the unique needs of girls and presenting components in ways that are relevant to them. Being the experts on how girls like to learn and lead, we know reaching girls early in engaging ways is imperative to ensure a more equitable future for girls and women in STEM.”

The EdTech Breakthrough Awards honors excellence and recognizes the innovation, hard work, and success in a range of educational technology categories, including Student Engagement, School Administration, Adaptive Learning, STEM Education, e-Learning, Career Preparation, and many more. This year’s program attracted more than 1,750 nominations from over 15 different countries throughout the world.

“The reality is that while 92% of girls are interested in STEM fields, female STEM representation is lacking and women continue to be underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math, collectively,” said James Johnson, Managing Director at EdTech Breakthrough. “This “breakthrough” initiative from Girl Scouts of the USA and Discovery Education bridges the gender gap, expanding STEM opportunities and creating a more equitable future for all. We are extremely proud to recognize Discovery Education along with Girl Scouts of the USA, for paving the way towards a brighter and more inclusive future. We extend a hearty congratulations for a well-deserved 2020 EdTech Breakthrough Award.”

We’re Girl Scouts of the USA
We’re 2.5 million strong—more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) ™ to change the world. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since, we’ve honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success.
