Take students behind the scenes of the world’s greatest museums: From wherever they are, students can get a virtual, all-access pass to the world’s top museums from Janson Media’s Museum Access, now available in Discovery Education Experience and Social Studies Techbook. Host Leslie Mueller visits locations like the Adler Planetarium, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Mystic Seaport Museum. With each visit, students will discover and learn about global culture, innovations, accomplishments, and heritage around the world.
Learn about marine biology: Join conservationist, artist and explorer Dr. Guy Harvey and his daughter Jessica as they travel the world to study and document the largest predators and most exotic wildlife on land and in the sea. Now available in the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation channel in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook, The Expedition Notebook and Guy Harvey Expedition series brings students up close and personal with sharks, turtles, lionfish, great barracudas, and more.
Reject e-cigarettes: Join the CVS Health Foundation, CATCH Global Foundation and Discovery Education for Clearing the Air: A Be Vape Free Virtual Field Trip, now available in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook. The virtual field trip provides young people and their families the facts and science to make healthier decisions. During the virtual field trip, students will gain powerful insights from their peers who share firsthand experiences of avoiding the dangers of e-cigarette use. They hear strategies for thinking critically about influences like advertising and social media; learn effective refusal skills; and debunk common vaping myths with first-hand insight from a leading health professional.
Get lost in a great (audio)book: Now live in Discovery Education Experience, the Audiobooks network channel helps all students access literature and enjoy books at their own pace. The Audiobooks channel showcases more than 200 works of literature, allowing students to listen to books like Hunger Games, Goosebumps, Shakespeare, and more. Students and teachers can easily browse the channel by grade range as well as genre, and new audiobooks are being added to the channel each week.
Listen and discover: Some of today’s most exciting new discoveries are coming from research supported by the National Science Foundation. And now students can listen to a collection of podcasts that explain that scientific research in a fun and fascinating way. The Discovery Files podcast collection provides an upbeat, entertaining look at the latest advances in science and engineering. From how sweat helps high-powered robots to how we can help watermelons thrive during climate change, each episode showcases innovative research projects funded by NSF. Found in the National Science Foundation network channel in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook.
Bring science into the living room: To encourage student curiosity and exploration outside the classroom while students are studying from home due to COVID-19, 3M has launched the 3M Science at Home video series. Now available in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook, the series presents simple and fun at-home experiments conducted by 3M scientists using common household items. The experiments are designed to reinforce core scientific principles in physics, chemistry, and biology and can be done from anywhere!
In addition, Discovery Education has added new content to the Viruses and Outbreaks channel currently found in Discovery Education Experience and the Science Techbook. Launched earlier this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Viruses and Outbreaks channel is a curated collection of resources designed to give students access to the latest news and information about the pandemic; help them understand the science behind viruses and outbreaks; and learn strategies for staying emotionally and physically healthy during times of uncertainty. This dynamic collection of resources now includes videos, images, interactives, podcasts, studio boards, and activities in both English and Spanish.
“Teaching today’s students, either remotely or in a classroom, is a challenge,” said Quinae Jackson, an educator in Georgia’s Clayton County Public Schools. “My lessons need to be immediately engaging, or I will lose my students’ attention very quickly. I am glad to have access to curated content from Discovery Education and their content partners. Their resources give me confidence that my students will focus in on their lessons and stay engaged in instruction either at home or in the classroom.”
Educators using Discovery Education’s digital services also receive support from the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.
“The importance of providing students access to immersive digital content is in my mind, one of the enduring lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Discovery Education Vice President of Digital Content Robin Porter. “The new content recently added to Discovery Education Experience and the Science and Social Studies Techbooks is part of Discovery Education’s ongoing effort to ensure we are providing the educators and students we serve access to high quality digital resources so no matter where they are, they can continue their education.”
In response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Discovery Education is offering schools and school systems not currently using the company’s digital services free access to Discovery Education Experience. Schools accepting this offer will have access to Discovery Education’s dynamic K-12 learning platform and its ready-to-use digital lesson plans, activities, and standards-aligned resources through the remainder of the school year.
