–New Partnership Provides District Educators and Students Access to Award-Winning Digital Content That Supports Instruction Across All K-12 Curricular Areas–
Silver Spring, Md. (February 19, 2020) – Massachusetts’ Andover Public Schools (APS) announce the selection of Discovery Education Experience to support innovative, child-centered learning in all K-12 classrooms districtwide. Created by Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, the award-winning Discovery Education Experience is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K–12 curricular areas.
To support the district’s continued focus on providing innovative instruction that prepares students for success beyond the classroom, district leaders sought a K-12 digital supplemental curricular resource. After a careful review, the district selected Discovery Education Experience.
“The Andover Public Schools are focused on providing excellence in child-centered instruction in early childhood, elementary, and secondary classrooms across the district,” said Joanne Najarian, APS’s director of Digital Learning. “One of the district’s strategic goals has always been the creation of authentic student learning experiences that moves curricular rigor forward. The addition of Discovery Education Experience to our teachers’ collection of resources provides our educators a powerful new tool that will help them work toward the district’s strategic goals.”
Discovery Education Experience—the latest iteration of Discovery Education’s popular Streaming Plus service—assists educators in creating real-world learning opportunities that engage all students and lead to improved academic achievement. The service’s standards-aligned content is assignable and can be bookmarked and saved for later use and remixed to meet the varying needs of diverse student populations in a safe and secure environment. In addition, the service’s up-to-date, high-quality, and ever-growing digital content collections, as well as a library of immersive virtual field trips and viewing parties, are drawn from trusted partners.
Students in elementary, middle and high school that have regular access to Discovery Education’s comprehensive, K-12 digital content service have higher attendance rates and are outpacing their peers on state assessments in reading, mathematics, and social studies. Additional findings tell a consistent story of how access to Discovery Education’s supplemental content services can be linked to higher student achievement, especially for racial/ethnic minorities and students impacted by poverty, disabilities, and limited English proficiency. To help APS educators integrate their new digital resources into classroom instruction in the coming school year, Discovery Education will provide district teachers numerous professional learning opportunities. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.
This new partnership also offers APS teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.
“We at Discovery Education are very excited to kick-off this new partnership with the Andover Public Schools,” said John David Son, Discovery Education’s Senior Manager of Education Partnerships. “Andover’s talented team of educators combined with Discovery Education’s dynamic digital content and professional learning opportunities make an unbeatable combination that will support district students’ continued success.”
Located just north of Boston, APS currently enrolls approximately 6,000 students in one preschool, five K-5 elementary schools, three middle schools, and a senior high school. Andover prides itself as one of the highest performing school districts in Massachusetts and is very competitive with top public and private schools in the nation. The district’s graduation rate is 96% (third highest in the state) and 95% of APS students are college-bound. These outstanding milestones are testaments to the culture and climate of APS schools, the rigor of their curriculum, the inclusiveness of their instruction, and the close monitoring of student progress in order to adjust instruction to meet the needs of each student.
