Pattonville School District, St. Ann, Missouri

The overall vision for Holman Middle School is to provide a rigorous and relevant education for all students. The vision includes meeting individual needs in academic, social and emotional areas. The main goals and priorities for the school year, according to reading specialist Trina Cornell, are to help students reach grade-level reading targets, monitor their progress, and motivate them to become lifelong readers and writers.

DreamBox Reading's Impact

Holman Middle School has made excellent strides in meeting these goals. During the first year of DreamBox Reading implementation (2017-2018), students showed significant growth in their reading across the board. Tier 2 students averaged two level 1 of 2 gains with 40 hours of work in the program, and Tier 3 students averaged 2.5 level gains with 60 hours of instruction. Holman 7th and 8th graders made average reading proficiency gains above the national average, all completing 60 or more DreamBox Reading lessons. This success continued in the 2021-22 school year with students averaging 2.7 reading level gains.

Cornell explains that DreamBox Reading is implemented for students in general reading classes, grades 6-8. Students are assessed through InSight and Measures of Academic Progress® to determine fluency. Students who don’t show proficiency are enrolled in a reading class where DreamBox Reading is a major component. Upon completion, students test again to exit the class and choose a new elective. “Students who exit the reading program at grade level maintain those levels outside of our reading classes,” says Cornell.

While the results from using DreamBox are impressive, educators’ means of motivating students to reach and exceed goals has been nothing short of inspiring. Building community among the students and setting goals are major motivators.

We spend a great deal of time gathering information on our students through various surveys and modes to create the best learning environment for each of them. We also introduce soft skills—perseverance, determination, motivation—and connect [the skills] to our goals and expectations for the class.

Lightbulb Moments

Students thrive on setting goals for themselves and achieving them. They choose what to focus on and what steps they’ll take weekly to meet their goals. At the end of the week, students revisit the goals they set on Friday and make adjustments.  They determine whether they reached their goals.

Students also dive into ongoing teacher-led competitions and challenges with vigor. Competitions include:

  • Reading Olympics: Students complete five combos and 20 reading lessons at 80% or higher.
  • Ready, Set, Go! A beginner competition where students learn the DreamBox Reading basics.
  • Movin’ On Up: A two-week window to encourage students to level up in reading or vocabulary.
  • Crushin’ It with Your Class: Students compete for highest average in reading and number of mastered vocabulary words.

The results are amazing, according to Cornell. Students love winning prizes. The excitement and recognition keep them engaged and moving forward. DreamBox Reading has also changed the way educators decide to teach.

We used to focus on the end goal of grade-level reading achievement, now we focus on weekly goal setting and reflection, and this is important because it's where the magic happens. It's what students do on a daily basis that makes DreamBox Reading work for them. Giving students this ownership allows them the freedom to make decisions for themselves, and truly take control of their own reading progress.

Personalized Teaching & Learning

Being able to personalize their learning is critical, and DreamBox Reading allows students to do that seamlessly.

The DreamBox Reading dashboards are favored by teachers and students alike. Teachers can collect information that helps them personalize lessons at each student’s right level. “On the Teacher Dashboard, we use the Assignments tab and the Student Overview tab daily,” explains Cornell. “The Student Overview tab has a great deal of information about each student, updating in real time. It gives us a beautiful snapshot of our students as readers—demonstrating where they have been, where they are and where they are headed.”

Students, on the other hand, love the Student Dashboard, which updates in real time as they complete lessons. They track their progress, set goals and make decision on what they want to learn. “It gives them the big picturecurrent reading rate, words read, closeness to leveling up, words mastered and types of stories that they enjoy reading,” says Cornell. “Choosing their backgrounds and avatars allows students to make this their own personal space and allows them to take ownership of their space in the program.”

By working with students at their skill levels, teachers have seen huge gains in their reading, confidence and motivation to reach their goals. At the same time, giving students a wide range of reading materials to choose from keeps them coming back for more.

Verona Area School District

Verona, WI

Discovery Education’s Impact

Verona Area School District was looking for fresh, innovative ways to engage students with learning that extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. The teachers wanted to offer rigorous academic content while also elevating their students’ sense of community and leadership skills. They found an invaluable resource in the Discovery Education Experience learning platform and its included Virtual Field Trips to bring an exciting, hands-on learning experience to K-12 students.

Popular among Discovery Education educators, Virtual Field Trips take students on a unique journey to make real-world connections: like meeting Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky and learning about STEM careers, visiting the arctic tundra to observe polar bears, or going behind the scenes at the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville, TN. These resources make an impact by creating connections between educators within a district, between subjects like music and physics, and between students and their community.

Since 2016, the district has been creating a new kind of interactive, hands-on learning activity that incorporates Virtual Field Trips and a little magic from its dedicated Educational Technology Coach, Rita Mortenson. What started out as a simple collaboration between teachers has evolved into a cross-curricular, cross-grade level learning experience. Now high schoolers are brought to the younger grades, and vice versa, to collaborate and experience the Virtual Field Trip together in engaging ways that they themselves have a hand in designing.

I’m very passionate about bringing joy to all spaces and elevating teachers. For instance, when we used Discovery Education to create an experience pairing a 2nd grade class with an AP Physics class, the AP Physics teacher said it was some of the greatest learning she has ever helped facilitate. It was amazing to see her students teach younger students about science experiments and watch them be leaders. We love to be champions for the teachers by helping create these moments.

Lightbulb Moments

These Virtual Field Trips are more than just a video to add into a lesson or show to students. The first example of this innovative collaboration among Verona Area School District students used the NFL Play 60 Virtual Field Trip, created in partnership with the National Football League and the American Heart Association. Students from different high school athletic and academic programs were brought in to help design hands-on learning activities stemming from this digital resource to connect with elementary students and engage them in skill building.

Today, there are a multitude of lightbulb moments showcasing how students connect through engaging, hands-on learning with these collaborative activities, and their impact extends beyond the classroom, too! High school students are empowered to make an impact on the younger generation and sharpen their leadership skills, which builds a sense of community.

Creating joy for students through these hands-on activities can help them learn new things or show what they have learned throughout a unit. For example, when elementary students completed a unit on weather, we set up an Extreme Weather Virtual Field Trip experience using Discovery Education Experience, with different stations students visited with high schoolers. This experience helps teachers visualize what they can do with online content and how to make it fun and exciting for their students. Making that connection between students and staff, but also between the curriculum and grade levels is really important!

Looking Ahead

According to teachers in the district, these collaborative Virtual Field Trips are “the best learning experience for their class,” and it’s been gaining more traction every year. The interest has expanded beyond the topics represented in Virtual Field Trips, which leaders like Rita see as an opportunity to lean on Discovery Education’s high-quality, diverse content to create even more collaborative learning opportunities.

With the support of district leadership and principals, Rita, Lisette, and other teacher-leaders are planning 10 or even 20 events a year, all while encouraging the participation of more teachers. Lastly, bringing in community leaders and outside industry leaders would open the door to Virtual Field Trips focused on careers to help prepare students for the future workforce and overall success.

A shift in focus to STEM learning results in improved student testing scores and engagement at Broward County Schools, according to a recent report.

A two-year study of Park Ridge Elementary School in Broward County, FL showed marked improvement after education leaders implemented the STEM focus supported by two services from Discovery Education — Science Techbook, a digital science textbook, and STEMformation, a standards-based professional development program.

The gains at Park Ridge followed an initiative at six elementary schools in Broward County designed to improve student outcomes by focusing on STEM studies. Students at all six schools demonstrated improvement on state assessments, but Park Ridge’s students in particular saw significant gains in their reading and math scores. Researchers attributed some of that success to Discovery Education’s implementation at the school.

The [STEMformation] program at Park Ridge ES, specifically, the integration of Discovery Education digital content and instructional practices into classroom instruction, has produced positive impacts on teaching and learning over the past two years.

English Language Fluency with DreamBox Reading

San Ysidro Adult School Student Finds English Language Fluency with DreamBox Reading

Success Stories

San Ysidro Adult School

Sweetwater Union High School District, Sweetwater, California

Angelica, a native Spanish speaker from Tijuana, Mexico, is determined to get her high school diploma from the United States. Her goals include earning her diploma, going to college to study mathematics, and starting a teaching career. At San Ysidro Adult School, she enrolled in advanced placement classes as well as high school English classes. Reading Plus became an essential part of her journey toward English fluency.

DreamBox Reading's Impact

At first, reading was challenging for Angelica. Feeling confident in her reading comprehension took time. But her experience with DreamBox Reading helped her appreciate completing her readings. Initially, she stuck to fiction texts on the program but then found readings that could help with credits toward other classes; history selections in DreamBox Reading have been particularly helpful. “I can say that at this time, I enjoy reading,” she says.

DreamBox Reading intelligently adapts and personalizes lessons for Angelica. It started her with beginner-level texts. As her proficiency grew, the platform upped the ante and gave her more complex reading lessons. In the beginning, she read about 80 words a minute, but now she reads and comprehends more than 180 words a minute. Within a year and a half, she had completed all DreamBox Reading grade levels.

Angelica believes that being able to see her progress on the dashboard increased her confidence. As her confidence grew, so did her vocabulary, proficiency, comprehension, and speed. “You can see how much improvement you have [made],” she says. And she can feel the improvement when she speaks English at school and at her job. Similarly, she’s seen growth in her writing proficiency. Angelica says that in the early days of using DreamBox Reading, she would write about one paragraph that often had grammatical errors. Now she is writing essays with more certainty and ease.

The flexibility of DreamBox Reading is also a perk for Angelica. The online platform can go anywhere:  the classroom, home, the library. So, when she had the time, she had access to her studies no matter where she was. DreamBox Reading not only helped her learn English, but it also improved her vocabulary, speed, and comprehension by helping her to identify the skills that everyone needs to read. She recommends to anyone who is considering Reading Plus to stay motivated, and you’ll be pleased with reading improvement.

Waterford Students See Big Gains in Reading with DreamBox

Waterford Graded School District Students Using DreamBox Reading Averaged 3.2+ Reading Level Gains

Success Stories

Waterford Graded School District Logo

Waterford Graded School District

Waterford, Wisconsin

Waterford Graded School District comprises three PK-5 elementary schools and one 6-8 middle school. District educators strive to close the achievement gap (measured as on-track to graduation) and accelerate the academic growth of its students. One tool teachers use to achieve that goal is DreamBox Reading.

DreamBox Reading continually collects student data and one of the most impressive features, according to educators, is SeeReader, where the program tracks a student’ independent reading rate. It then adapts to each student’s abilities, giving them the right lessons at the right time.

DreamBox Reading's Impact

Waterford has found that DreamBox Reading helps them meet the needs for student intervention and accelerated student enrichment.  As an intervention tool, DreamBox Reading provides intervention for students who need help beyond the universal level in fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, stamina and even motivation.  On the other hand, for gifted students, DreamBox Reading adapts to higher reading levels that challenge their abilities.

We use DreamBox Reading as a tool for closing achievement gaps in reading as well as a tool to promote academic growth in our most accelerated learners.

Jane Aegerter
Director of Student and Staff Services

DreamBox Reading recommends to educators that students complete 80+ lessons in a year to see the biggest gains. Students at Waterford Graded School District certainly grew in the 2021-22 school year. Those who completed 80+ lessons grew an average of 3.2 reading levels. Additionally, those who completed 100+ lessons averaged 4.0 reading level gains.

Aegerter knows that DreamBox Reading is working because it does what it says it will when students use it the recommended amount. It even helps improve fluency when students can’t complete the recommended lessons.

DreamBox Reading levels the playing field among the students. All groups, from below-level to accelerated students, use DreamBox Reading, and the results speak for themselves.

If you look at our data, students who have an opportunity to interact with DreamBox Reading for the prescribed amount of time have made tremendous growth; up to five [reading] levels. The students who are not able to interact with the program as much as we would hope are still seeing wonderful growth.

2021-2022 Average Reading Level Gains

Along with the proven student growth, educators appreciate the professional development and availability of DreamBox representatives in implementing the program.

Ongoing professional development is in the works for fall to keep everyone up to date on the nuances, new features and to review last year’s data. All staff have embraced the value of DreamBox Reading and are open to finding new ways to ensure students have the time and space to complete as many lessons as possible to reach their full potential.

Working with DreamBox has been a dream, quite frankly. [Reps] have supported our district by conducting both virtual and in-person training for our teachers several times. It’s not a one-and-done experience.
