Discovery Education Sets Date for Third Annual Free, Online Professional Development Event
12-hour streamathon on September 23 offers sessions on integrating digital media into classroom instruction
Silver Spring, MD (September 4, 2008) – Discovery Education announced today that the third annual streamathon has been scheduled for September 23, 2008, from 9 a.m. EST to 9 p.m. EST. This free, online professional development event is open to educators nationwide and is a service of Discovery Education, a division of Discovery Communications, whose networks include Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and the Science Channel.
During the 12-hour streamathon, renowned Discovery Education experts including Hall Davidson, Steve Dembo and Lance Rougeux will present a series of information-packed sessions on how to integrate the newest online technologies used by today’s media-savvy students into classroom instruction. Among the topics slated for presentation are an introduction to streaming media, tips and tricks for integrating digital media with popular Web 2.0 websites, and strategies for incorporating free movie making tools and multi-media PowerPoint presentations into curricula.
“Each year that I’ve attended the Discovery Education streamathon, I’ve learned new and imaginative ways to use digital media and educational technologies in my fourth grade classroom,” explained Teryl Magee of Mooreland Heights Elementary in Tennessee's Knox County Public School System. “Discovery Education's presenters create and deliver concise sessions packed with helpful tips and tricks to apply digital media where it can have the greatest impact on learning.”
In addition to becoming an annual d estination for classroom teachers, the streamathon also provides school administrators, instructional technology specialists and professional development personnel new content for their upcoming seminars and workshops.
“The 2007 Discovery Education streamathon was amazing,” commented Anne Truger, Instructional Technology Specialist at the Special Education District of Lake County in Illinois. “My primary focus is providing professional development and supporting technology integration within my district, and I found the streamathon taught me a number of new skills I could pass on to my colleagues. I’ve definitely marked my calendar to attend this year's streamathon and I encourage any educator interested in growing their technology integration skills to do the same.”
Educators interested in joining any portion of this free professional development opportunity are encouraged to register for the 2008 streamathon at http://url.ie/mgd. Streamathon sessions fill to capacity quickly, so participants are encouraged to register for this event today.
